Synchiropus stellatus

The Red Scooter Dragonet, also known as the Starry Dragonet, is a beautifully patterned reef fish with a pinkish-gold body covered in dark sepia blotches and silvery spots. Males are especially striking, featuring an elongated dorsal fin with lines and eye-like markings, while females display a black dorsal fin with a white margin. This small species grows to about 3 inches, making it an attractive and manageable addition to marine aquariums. In the wild, Red Scooter Dragonets are found on protected reefs and rubble zones throughout the Indian Ocean, from East Africa to Indonesia, typically at depths of 5–40 meters. They are bottom-dwelling carnivores, feeding on small benthic invertebrates such as copepods and amphipods. Males may be territorial, but the species is generally peaceful and can be kept singly or in pairs. In the aquarium, Red Scooter Dragonets require a well-established tank with plenty of live rock and a thriving copepod population. Sandy substrates and ample hiding spaces help them feel secure and allow natural foraging behavior. They may gradually accept frozen or pelletized foods, but patience is essential. Considered reef-safe, Red Scooter Dragonets do not harm corals or invertebrates. With proper tank conditions, careful attention to feeding, and sufficient hiding places, their vibrant coloration, intricate patterns, and active behavior make them a rewarding choice for experienced marine aquarists.
