Blue Pelagic Porcupine Pufferfish - Philippines
The Blue Pelagic Porcupine Pufferfish is an open-ocean species that differs from many other porcupinefish by spending its life in the water column rather than around reefs or the seafloor. It has a blue back and sides covered with small black spots, spotted fins, a dark band on the throat, and a silvery white belly. This species is circumtropical and is usually found in tropical pelagic waters, often schooling near the surface. It feeds mainly on larger zooplankton and fish larvae. Like other porcupinefish, it can inflate its body as a defense when threatened. This species along with most other larger pufferfish species are not considered reef safe since they prefer to eat sessile invertebrates. For continued health, provide a varied diet of meaty foods, such as Mysis, chopped seafood, and Cockle, fed multiple times a day. Diodon eydouxii can reach about 10.6 inches in total length. Due to its active open-water lifestyle, schooling behavior, and need for substantial swimming space, this species requires a minimum of a 6ā aquarium, and with other FLOWLR fish species.
